It was used for serving food to poor people. In 1983 this service closed and the building was sold to the City of Bremen. A year later a leaseholder opens the “Café Ambiente”. He initiated cultural and literature events. Since then the Café developed itself as a cultural and gastronomical place in Bremen.
In 1997 it was necessary to extend and to renovate the building completely. For the city of Bremen this provided the opportunity to demonstrate and promote the efficient energy use and the use of renewable energies on an existing building. Consequently the building became one of the pilot projects of the “Bremer Energie-Konsens”, the climate protection agency for the north German city-state of Bremen.
The German branch of Friends of the Earth, Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) developed the energy concept for the building.
In total an investment of € 930.000,- was needed to carry out the renovation of the building. A subsidy of € 170.000,- was given by the local utility company, “swb Enordia”, and the climate protection agency of Bremen. | | Keywords | (bipv) building integrated pv |
